The client purchased two contiguous properties, one with a greenhouse and the other with a small residence. After renovating the original Lord & Burnham greenhouse and the bungalow, driveways were added to blend into the natural landscape. After screening the properties from a neighbor’s house with mature evergreens, Larry Weaner Associates created a meadow, and restored the native wetland planting around the small salt marsh pond. The property now contributes to the improved water quality of Oyster Bay (which flows into Long Island Sound), using no chemicals or fertilizers for the landscape maintenance. Carbon output is reduced because the meadow is only mowed once a year. The properties are open to the public every summer for a community art show, which includes path walks laid out in the meadow.
